SIS Paris General Information

Summer Intensive Studies is open to all students who wish to deepen their knowledge of art and design in a rigorous academic environment. This is an open enrollment program with no prerequisites required for attendance. Class sizes are limited. Courses fill quickly and early registration is advised. Registration is on a first-come.

Program Levels

For college and adult applicants who have completed at least one year of college, or are 19 years of age or older by the start of the program. Many college and adult level students enroll in the program to gain intensive exposure to the selected design discipline helpful in making decisions regarding academic and professional goals or to complement full-time degree programs. Others enroll to build the skills and portfolio necessary to gain acceptance to graduate programs.

Graduate Level
A limited number of courses are offered for graduate credit and students who have completed an undergraduate degree are eligible to enroll. Two courses in Paris, Architecture and Interiors of Paris: A Drawing Investigation and The Photo Essay, are available for two graduate credits at a cost of $3,078.
Please note: Photography in Paris combines pre-college and college/adult levels.

Pre-College Level
For high school students entering their junior or senior year and for recent high school graduates. Students must be age 16 or older by July 6, 2009, the start of the program, with no exceptions. This immersion in the college experience introduces high school students to life in a college of art and design.

Travel to Paris

Students may make their own flight arrangements or join the Parsons group flight from New York. A member of the Parsons staff will meet this flight at the Paris airport and escort students to the dorms. Parsons staff do not travel with the students on the flight.

U.S. Students: Visas

Visas are not required for U.S. citizens visiting France for fewer than three months. Citizens of countries other than the U.S. and the member states of the European Union are responsible for obtaining appropriate visas.

International Students: Language and Visas

Parsons' Summer Intensive Studies welcomes students from around the world to explore the abundance of art and design resources in New York and Paris. Parsons values the unique perspective each student brings to the program and the dynamic nature of a culturally diverse student body.

Students whose first language is not English must score a minimum of 550 on the TOEFL (Test of English as a Foreign Language). For more information about the TOEFL, please visit www.toefl.org. Students may provide documentation of English proficiency as a substitute for the TOEFL. If these documents prove to be sufficient, the TOEFL requirement may be waived at the discretion of the program staff.

Class Schedule, Attendance and Workload

Students attend classes Monday through Friday for six hours per day. Most classes run from 9 am to 11:50 pm and 1 pm to 3:50 pm, with a one-hour lunch break. Attendance is mandatory for all participants. Students who miss more than two classes will fail the course, subject to faculty and administrative review. Students who do not meet course expectations may be asked to leave the program. Homework is assigned on a daily basis and is a substantial component of the program.

College Credit

All Paris Summer Intensive Studies students in the four-week college/adult level courses earn four college credits.

Students enrolled in two-week college/adult courses earn two college credits. Two courses, Architecture and Interior of Paris and The Photo Essay, are available for two graduate credits for students who have completed an undergraduate degree.

Participants should consult an academic advisor at their home institution for further details regarding approval, transfer and fulfillment of graduation requirements.

Faculty

Courses are taught by Parsons' faculty and visiting experts who are New York- and Paris-based artists and designers. Guest lecturers and critics present current professional practices and trends from their disciplines. Faculty utilize the extensive opportunities available in Paris, including museums, galleries, design studios and libraries.

Supplies

Students provide their own art supplies. A list of required and recommended materials will be sent to each registrant before the summer session begins. Expenses are estimated at a cost of $400.

College/Adult Work Scholars Program - Paris

A limited number of college/adult student interns are accepted for the three-week period before the start of the summer program. Students work 20 hours a week until the program begins and receive full tuition remission. Housing is not provided during the internship. Work responsibilities include basic office support, faculty assistance, facilities preparation, and student activities support planning. Applicants must be citizens or permanent residents of the United States. The application deadline is March 1. The work scholars program does not cover housing fees, living costs, airfare, or expenses for supplies. Please see the links below for detailed information and application downloads. Facilities

Summer classes are held outdoors, on location, in museums and at special exhibitions. Fashion illustration, photography, and some pre-college drawing and painting classes are held at the Parsons Studios at 14, rue Letellier, on the left bank of the Seine near the Eiffel Tower.

Withdrawals and Refunds

All withdrawals must be received in writing before the following dates.
Before May 1: full refund of tuition; refund of housing fees minus $250
Before June 1: refund of tuition minus 20 percent; refund of housing fees minus $250
After June 1: no tuition or housing refunds
