Who attends Summer Intensive Studies?
Pre-College students must be 16 years of age by the start date of the program.
Pre-College students with a strong interest in art and design who wish to explore their interest and/or work on portfolios for college admissions.
College and adult applicants need to have completed at least one year of college, or are 19 years of age or older by the start of the program. Many college and adult level students enroll in the program to gain intensive exposure to the selected design discipline helpful in making decisions regarding academic and professional goals or to complement full-time degree programs. Others enroll to build the skills and portfolio necessary to gain acceptance to graduate programs.
What are the class hours?
9am -11:50am and 1 to 3:50pm
How much homework is there?
2-3 hours per day. It is a rigorous academic program.
Do I get to see New York while I am studying there?
While in class and on their own, students use New York as a resource for their work.
Frequently there are on-site visits to museums, exhibitions, and places of interest during class hours.
Who are the faculty?
Courses are taught by Parsons' faculty and a limited number of New York-and Paris-based
artists and designers. Guest lecturers and critics present current professional practices and trends from their disciplines.
How big are the classes?
There is a maximum of 18 students per class.
Are there scholarships available?

Is there a payment plan available?
No. Students need to make a full tuition payment in order to reserve a space in the program.
When should I apply?
This is an open enrollment program, we recommend registering at your earliest convenience.

What should I do if the class I wanted to take is already full?
We will put you on a waiting list automatically and notify you if a space has become available. Please email us if you'd like to enroll in another course or call if you need assistance. Contact Us.
Where and when do I get a supply list?
Supply lists will be available approximately three weeks
before the start of the program and can be viewed online here.
Is there enough housing available?
Yes, as long as you apply within the application deadlines, housing will be available. Visit: here.
Can I apply for housing online?
No. To apply for housing you need to print out the housing application and mail it to the university housing office. Visit: here. For Paris housing should send all materials to Parsons SPACE office.

The dormitories are in walking distance: S, T, V
All fashion classes take place in the K building (midtown) and require a 30 minute commute from the dormitories.
Is there internet access in the dormitories?
Yes, most facilities provide phone, internet, and cable access.

Is there a meal plan and where can I eat?
?For pre-college level students in Summer Intensive Studies New York who register for housing 10 meals per week are included in the housing fee. Other students can apply to a meal plan through dining services: http://www.dineoncampus.com/thenewschool/
Meal plans are only available during session II.
There are many of cheap places to eat in the area. We will provide our students with a list of recommended places to eat on the first day of the program.
Is it safe in New York?
The New York classrooms and dormitories are in safe locations. We remind our students to be watchful since this is a large metropolitan area. Theft can occur. How are pre-college students supervised?
The school is located in the heart of Greenwich Village, which is a very desirable location in Manhattan.
Students are with faculty during class hours between 9 - 11:50am and 1 - 3:50pm. During the lunch hour students are not supervised and go to one of the student cafeterias or take lunch in a nearby restaurant or deli.
After class and before curfew (4pm - midnight) the students do their homework (2-3 hours), eat, and have leisure time. There is always staff on duty at the residence halls in case a student needs help. Generally the students connect quickly with their classmates and go out in groups.
There are program sponsored events often during the four weeks for students to extend their interests beyond the class and meet other students from the program. Events in the past include: Alumni Career Panel, Admissions Information Sessions, New York Mets Baseball Game, and the Broadway musical Rent.
Students who stay in the dormitory:
All residence halls have 24-hour guards on duty. Entry is carefully regulated. All guests (including parents, guardians and siblings) must leave a photo ID and register in the guest log when visiting. Students enrolled in Summer Intensive Studies who are 18 years of age or younger as of July 1, 2006 are subject to curfew requirements and may not have overnight guests in their rooms. This curfew has been established for participant's safety. Student Housing will enforce a 12am midnight curfew, seven days a week, for the duration of the program. Failure to observe this curfew will result in removal from the residence hall. Students who turn 19 during the course of the program will also be required to abide by the curfew.
Students 19 and older will be assigned to non-curfew space and may request overnight guest accommodation on a very limited basis. A limited number of guest rooms are available for visiting overnight guests in other buildings during the summer for a fee.
What is going on during weekends? Am I going to be all alone?
Students usually connect quickly and participate in group activities.
There will be extra-curricular activities on weekends during Summer Intensive Studies in New York. A complete calendar of these activities will be available online approximately three weeks before the program start. Events in the past include: Alumni Career Panel, Admissions Information Sessions, New York Mets Baseball Game, and the Broadway musical Rent.
Are there any student activities outside of class time?
Activities are scheduled outside of class time and provide an opportunity to become acquainted with one another and New York City. Some events relate to admission to degree programs and career exploration including Portfolio Review Day, Career Discovery Day, and industry guest lecturers.
What should I bring with me?
Travel light. Bring with you an umbrella, good walking shoes, and light clothing. New York is usually hot and steamy during the summer.
How can I communicate with friends and family?
Most of the University dormitories are equipped with internet access and phones.
The University computer center offers students free access to a state-of-the-art computer lab with internet access.
Can I mail supplies and other things to the University?
No. There is not a space to store student belongings. Packages for students are not accepted.
Are student visa?s for international students required?
Yes. International students need to apply for a I-20 student visa.
Once students have been registered in the program a written acknowledgement of their registration will be mailed to them. The student identification number on this letter will enable them to log on at Link http://www.newschool.edu/admin/packet/parsonssummer/ to access visa application procedures and forms.
International students should register early due to long visa processing times.
Is there a language requirement? (Test of English as a Foreign Language-TOEFL)?
A TOEFL score of 550 is required for international students. To find out more about TOEFL click here to request official transcripts.
Do the earned college credits transfer to my college?
The total class hours during the program are 120 and most colleges accept the earned credits. You should check with an advisor at your college if the credit applies.
How do I retrieve my grade and transcipt?
All students will receive a student handbook with information on how to request grades, transcrips, etc.
