The Design Trust for Public Space, in cooperation with Parsons The New School for Design, presents Designing the Taxi, an exhibition that builds on the momentum of the extraordinarily successful two-part workshop held last spring that investigated the future of the iconic New York City taxicab as it approaches its centennial in 2007.

The exhibition of designs presenting future ideas for the taxi will be on view from November 3, 2005, through January 15, 2006, at the Parsons gallery at 2 West 13th Street. An opening reception will take place on Wednesday, November 2, 6-9 p.m., which will also celebrate the publication of the Designing the Taxi findings.

“Taxis are crucial to the city’s transportation network and self-image,” notes Deborah Marton, Executive Director, Design Trust for Public Space. “This exhibition marks the progress of the taxi improvement process and is rooted in the collaborative work between designers, people who own cabs and industry regulators. The Design Trust initiated this groundbreaking project to connect the best design talent with the public sector to make New York City a better place to live and work.”

“The impressive results of the Designing the Taxi project make clear the impact of good design on every aspect of our lives, including the taxi,” said Parsons Dean Paul Goldberger. “From advancing sustainable design to investigating accessibility and communications improvements, the concepts on view in the exhibition reflect many of the issues that Parsons students and faculty explore on a regular basis.”

The exhibition, a collaboration of the Design Trust, Parsons, and Pentagram, will feature the work of leading design firms who participated in the workshops, including Antenna Design, Birsel + Seck, IDEO, Ken Smith Landscape Architect, TRUCK, and Weisz + Yoes. In addition, the exhibition will feature new concepts by design firms including: Pentagram, Imagination, Hybrid Product Design, Blue Marlin, CityStreets, and Fox & Fowle.
