Heliodoro San Miguel Ph.D.

Bio: PhD in Philosophy, Autonomous University of Madrid, Spain. MFA in Film Direction and Production, New York University. Specialization in 16th to 20th century history, philosophy and methodology of science and technology. Recent publications: “The Rise of Technology” included in El Pensamiento Cient’fico en la Sociedad Actual (Madrid, 2006). Film: Specialization in history (Western and Latin American cinemas), film analysis and aesthetics, silent cinema, scientific cinema. Recent publications: co-author of The Cinema of Latin America (Wallflower Press, 2003).

Courses

Aesthetics in Early Film

This course explores the aesthetic and intellectual roots that contributed to define cinema as an art, and the diverse currents that shaped modern film.

Images of Science in Cinema

In this course we will explore the mutual and complex interrelations between science and cinema. Cinema was born as a scientific marvel, but soon transformed into an industrial art and the most powerful form of entertainment.

Technology and Social Change

This course analyzes the impact of technology in society, pointing out the ways in which the development and introduction of new technologies not only transforms their surroundings, but also modifies existing social values and relations, and creates new ones.
