Bio: Assistant Professor and Associate Chair of Photography, Parsons The New School for Design. Fine Art photographer, painter, writer, and former Director of Photography at LIFE Magazine, 2004-2007. From 1993-2004, Director of Photography at Vibe Magazine. His paintings, drawings, and photography have been shown in numerous exhibitions in the United States, including New York, Los Angeles. His writing and art have appeared in The Partisan Review, The Paris Review, S magazine, Big magazine, One World, Vibe, aRude, Juxtapose, Next Level: a critical review of Photography. His photographs have been published in The New York Times Magazine, Werk, New York Magazine, Clam, Premiere, Spin, Talk, Raygun, Paper, Nerve, Manhattan File, Voidek, Gotham, Vice, E Design, “Graphis Photo Annual 2000,” “American Photography: Volumes 16, 18, & 19,” “Masterminds of Mode: International Fashion Festival in Japan” (2000), “Nerve: The New Nude” (Chronicle Books), and “The New Erotic Photography” Taschen, 2007.

CoursesIndependent Study Independent Studies are limited to Seniors. Instructor hours need to be 1-2 face to face hours per week. Projects proposed for an independent study must be of a type and form that cannot be done in a class offered in the Photography Department’s curriculum. Picturing Sexuality The class examines the Female and Male Body from the origin of Photography to the present. The class will explore the evolution of the body and sexuality in Photography through its beginnings in Anthropology, in Art Photography including the Victorian era, Surrealism, Fashion Photography, on through to contemporary photography from throughout the world, including Helmut Newton, Nobuoyoshi Araki, Francesca Woodman, Avedon, Man Ray, Julia Margaret Cameron and many others. Senior Seminar 1 Seniors will identify and complete a photographic “senior thesis” in this course. They will be required to define their project and present it in final form by the last class of the semester. Senior Seminar 2 The second semester prepares the student for senior exhibition and professional aspects as a free-lance photographer. Senior Thesis Tutorial In correlation to Senior Seminar, this required independent study will allow students and instructors to meet with each other and discuss projects. Times and locations will be at the discretion of each instructor.
