BBA Essay Instructions

In an essay of 500-550 words, please describe a situation in which you combined creativity and analysis to solve a challenging problem. We are open to any problem: it could be personal, social, political, environmental, or something very different. We are more interested in your process or method in considering the problem, than whether you reached a complete solution.

BS Statement of Purpose

In an essay of 500-550 words, please discuss a major environmental challenge facing a large urban area such as New York, Los Angeles, Mexico City, London, etc. and propose a solution that would focus on design and sustainability.

Parsons Challenge
BBA applicants must submit the 6-part exercise described below. Completed assignments may be submitted in three ways:

  • You may upload and submit your 6-part Parsons Challenge (as individual .jpg, .tiff, .gif, .pdf, or .doc files, 2MB limit each) as part of the online application. If you select this method of submission, further instructions will be provided in the Additional Requirements section of the online application. Parsons recommends using Blogspot and Flicker. We do not recommend using MySpace, Facebook, or Deviantart.

    -or-

  • You may provide us with a URL/link to a website where the Admissions Committee can view your Parsons Challenge. If you select this method of submission, you will be asked for a valid URL/link (as well as navigation instructions) in the online application.

    -or-

  • You may mail your completed Parsons Challenge to the Admissions Office. If submitted via mail, presentation must be in one of the following formats only: slides, cross-platform CD Rom, or DVD. All mailed materials must be accompanied by a Materials Cover Sheet, available in the Supplemental Forms section of the online application. All work must be clearly marked with your name and date of birth.

Instructions:

  • Where do you live? What are your everyday activities? Where do you go? What have you overlooked? Discover something new within your familiar surroundings and daily life; this might be an object, event, activity, or location.
  • Interpret your discovery in three (3) perspectives in any medium and in three (3) statements of approximately 150 words each. Projects may proceed from image to text or text to image. Each interpretation should represent a different perspective or point of view. Each statement should explore your creative and imaginative process and contribute to the work in both form and content.
  • Media may include drawing, video, photography, sculpture, 3-D work, collage, digital images or any combination of the above.

Your work will be evaluated on both your writing and your visuals and the relationship you are able to create between the two.
