Requirements

Applicants for graduate admission for the fall term must submit a complete application packet by February 1st. Parsons Graduate Programs use the “Self-Managed Application Process.” Submit your application online, and submit any supplemental mailed application materials to the Admission Office in one packet, whenever possible. Include a Materials Cover Sheet, which can be downloaded from the Supplemental Forms section of the online application.

Applicants must submit the following to the Office of Admissions:

  1. Application: Complete the online application.
  2. Application Fee: $50 non-refundable application fee is required. Only credit cards are accepted using the online application.
  3. Official Transcripts: Have original, sealed copies of your official college transcripts sent to you, for submission with your application packet, or, if that is not possible, have your institution send transcripts directly to Parsons Graduate Programs (see address below). Photocopies are not acceptable. International Records: All applicants with international transcripts are required to submit an original transcript, a certified English language translation, and a Course-By-Course Evaluation Report with their supporting materials. These course-by-course reports are prepared by World Education Services (www.wes.org), our preferred provider, or another member of the National Association of Credit Evaluation Services (NACES). We recommend that you start the evaluation process, including submission of all required documents to WES (or another provider), as early as possible, in order to ensure the timely completion of your evaluation report. Request that your report be sent to Parsons The New School for Design, University Admissions, 72 5th Avenue, New York, NY, 10011. (If you apply online, search for “New School Parsons” when requesting our institution.) If another provider is unable to send the report directly to the school, please collect and send the evaluation report along with a Materials Cover Sheet.
  4. A brief resume (c.v.) including appropriate work experience, travel, exhibitions, etc., must be submitted online. List dates and positions held.
  5. Statement of Interest and Intentions must be submitted online.
  6. Two letters of recommendation from faculty or people with whom the applicant has worked professionally. These may be submitted by the references online, or, you may forward sealed references with your application packet.
  7. If English is not an applicant’s native language, then he or she must submit results of the TOEFL exam (the Test of English as a Foreign Language). Students required to take the TOEFL exam may obtain further information from the Educational Testing Service site. Minimum score required: 580 written, 237 computer-based, or 92 internet-based.
  8. A portfolio consisting of 20 images of Fine Art work which may include painting, drawing, sculpture, printmaking, photography, video, installation, or performance. This portfolio may be submitted on a CD containing 20 images of current work in PDF format and/or on a DVD containing 4 three-minute clips of time-based work in any media. We do not accept slides or url links.

    Also, please enclose an inventory list of work with your disk. The list should include: Title (in italics), medium, dimensions (height first), date, and a thumbnail picture of the work in the right-hand margin. The numbers used in your inventory list should correspond to the numbering of your image files.

    Example:
    1. Title, oil on canvas, 50” x 40”, 2008
    2. Title, wood, steel and plaster, 16” x 20” x 5”, 2008

    Images should be placed in a folder labeled in the following manner:

    Example:
    LASTNAME_FIRSTNAME

    Within the folder, number each image along with your name. The numbers should correspond to your inventory list:

    Example:
    LASTNAME_FIRSTNAME1
    LASTNAME_FIRSTNAME2

    Mail your portfolio to the Admissions Office at the address below. All mailed materials must be accompanied by a Materials Cover Sheet, available in the Supplemental Forms section of the online application.

  9. As part of the admissions process, all finalists for the program will be interviewed by the Graduate Faculty.

Graduate students are automatically considered for merit scholarships as part of the admission process. If you are a U.S. citizen or an eligible non-citizen and want to be considered for financial aid, complete the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) which can be found on the web at www.fafsa.ed.gov
